The Arizona woman who left her baby on her car roof and drove off has pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor DUI along with child abuse charges, reports The Washington Post.
Last year, Catalina Clouser strapped her five-week-old baby boy to the car seat. However, the young mother forgot to carry the car seat (with the baby) into the car. Instead, she left her baby on the roof of the car and drove off. At some point, the baby fell off the car and landed in the middle of an intersection.
WItnesses found the baby still securely strapped into the car seat and the child was in good condition.
After police caught up with the baby's mother, they discovered that she had just left the home of a friend where she had smoked marijuana. Perhaps due to this haze, Clouser was able to strap her child to the car seat, but did not follow through and actually place the car seat into the car.
Washington Pot DUI Law
In Washington, it is legal to smoke marijuana on a recreational basis. However, a driver still cannot get behind the wheels of the car if he or she is impaired by marijuana. This means that you cannot drive if you have more than five nanograms of THC in your system or if your driving is otherwise impaired by the pot. So even if you only have trace amounts of THC in your system, you could be arrested if your driving is impaired (which may be evidenced by driving with your baby on the roof of your car).
