What to look for when hiring a Seattle DUI attorney

Posted by Aaron J. Wolff | Apr 03, 2012 | 0 Comments

Unlike most crimes, an arrest for DUI can happen to almost anyone. Each year, approximately 40,000 drivers in Washington are arrested for DUI. The consequences of a DUI conviction are severe and far-reaching. It is imperative that anyone arrested for a DUI have an attorney to advocate and protect their interests.

Over the years, I have been asked countless times what a person should look for when hiring a DUI attorney? My answer has always been the same and consists of two criterium.

1. EXPERIENCE

First (and foremost) is experience. I strongly recommend a person accused of a Seattle DUI seek an attorney whose practice is either limited to or predominantly DUI defense. The attorney should also have specialized training in the field such as field sobriety test administration and be a member of organizations devoted to DUI defense (National College of DUI Defense). There are many fine attorneys in the Seattle area who are my colleagues and friends who fit this description.

In addition to experience in the field of DUI defense, the attorney should also be familiar and regularly appear in the jurisdiction where the DUI charge will be filed. There is no uniformity to DUI cases. A Seattle DUI case is much different than a Kirkland or Bellevue DUI arrest. Each case is unique. As such, it is very important that the attorney be familiar with the court, judge and prosecutor. I am not suggesting this in and of itself will lead to a better result of a DUI charge. But it certainly is an intangible that may have a positive effect.

2. COMMUNICATION

It is esential that there be a high level of communication between the attorney and client. A DUI case is not resolved in a few weeks. Typically, they go on for several months. Undoubtedly, it causes much stress and concern. Having an attorney who is responsive and always able to address a person's questions and concerns can help diffuse the months of uncertainty. When there is a high level of communication, there generally is a greater level of trust.
