Tennessee Woman Arrested for DUI w/ 7 Children in the Car

A Memphis, Tennessee woman was arrested for a DUI while driving with seven children in her car, reports The Associated Press.

Quindell Edgerton was arrested Thursday afternoon after a witness reportedly called the police and notified them of the woman. When the police stopped the 34-year-old, they noted that her speech was slurred and that she smelled of alcohol.

She claimed to have drunk two beers; however, the woman's blood alcohol content of 0.175 tells a different story. The legal limit to drive in Tennessee (and Washington state as well) is 0.08. So Edgerton was well over twice the legal limit.

When police tallied the children in the car, five of the children ranged in ages from five-years-old to 15-years-old. Two of the children's ages were not noted.

Edgerton will now face child endangerment charges to go along with her DUI charges.

Washington also imposes more severe penalties for drunk drivers who have minor children in their car. Someone arrested faces greater monetary fines and may be required to keep an ignition interlock device in the car for an additional six months.

Law enforcement will also document that a child was in the car and will notify Child Protective Services. It's possible that the driver's children could be taken away.

A drunk driving charge is severe. But being arrested for a DUI while having a child in the car can have major consequences on your family. If you face a charge of a DUI with a minor in the vehicle, you will need experienced counsel on your side.
