The new team of Washington State Patrol Troopers -- the Target Zero Team -- made far more drunk driving arrests during the month of July than usual, reports KREM.com.
The team entered its first month in July with a focus on making DUI arrests during the dangerous summer months its priority. For a variety of reasons, law enforcement personnel point to the weeks between Memorial Day and Labor Day as being particularly dangerous for drunk driving.
In July, the Target Zero Team made 55 arrests in the Spokane area. Typically, only 20 drivers are arrested during this period of time.
Along with looking for drunk drivers, the Target Zero Team is on the lookout for drivers not wearing safety belts as well as those that tailgate and engage in other dangerous driving practices.
The Target Zero Team is funded by a national grant and is expected to run for two years before being put up for renewal.
The State of Washington has put a definite emphasis on stopping drunk driving this year. In addition to dedicated patrols like the Target Zero Team, the state has also instituted new DUI laws that provide for increased oversight and faster penalties for repeat DUI offenders.
With the renewed focus on prosecuting drunk drivers, those accused of the crime will need experienced counsel to help defend the charges. Someone accused of a DUI is innocent until proven guilty. However, with motivated lawmakers and hardened prosecutors, it can be difficult for a DUI defendant to get a fair trial. That's why if you are arrested for a DUI in the Seattle or King County areas, you will want to work with a DUI attorney at Wolff Criminal Defense.
Our attorneys include a former DUI prosecutor and we have many years fighting for the rights of DUI defendants. Contact us at 425-284-2000 to discuss the facts of your case.
