Seattle Prepares to Combat Halloween DUI Statistics

Posted by Aaron J. Wolff | Oct 29, 2012 | 0 Comments

Halloween is a time for letting loose with friends and reveling in the excitement of costume parties, haunted houses and assorted sweets. But each year, drunk driving arrests spike on Halloween night. If history is any indication, police in Seattle and surrounding cities will be on high alert, and they’ll be looking for any signs of possible intoxication.

If you plan to engage in Halloween revelry with friends or relatives this Wednesday night, have a great time, but remember to be safe and use common sense. Between 2008 and 2010, 581 arrests were made in Pierce and King Counties on Halloween night, and last year, local law enforcement agencies ramped up their efforts on Halloween night as part of the state’s Washington State Target Zero goal, which seeks to eliminate all fatal and serious injury crashes by 2030.

If you do plan on drinking on Halloween night, find a designated driver, or if the festivities are taking place at a friend’s home, make arrangements to stay there for the night. Don’t take the risk of driving while impaired. It’s just not worth it. You may also consider the use of public transportation or a cab service, as advised by the Public Health Department.

"Impaired drivers are the scariest things on our roads this weekend," Dr. David Fleming, Seattle & King County Public Health Director, told q13fox.com at this time last year. "Treat everyone to a fun and safe Halloween by driving sober or planning a safe ride home. Designate a sober driver, ride a bus or use cabs..."
