Marshawn Lynch to Make Plea Deal in Drunk Driving Case

Posted by Aaron J. Wolff | Feb 26, 2014 | 0 Comments

Seattle Seahawk Marshawn Lynch has reportedly agreed to make a plea deal to resolve his drunk driving case. The star running back will plead guilty to a lesser charge of reckless driving and in exchange prosecutors will drop the drunk driving charge, reports ESPN.

Lynch was charged with driving intoxicated in Oakland, California back in 2012. The 27-year-old was arrested in the early morning hours during the offseason after a highway patrol officer allegedly observed Lynch driving in an erratic manor, weaving in and out of traffic. Lynch took a breath test and registered a 0.08 blood alcohol level -- the lowest amount you can register that is still above the legal limit.

Lynch's attorney argued that his client had a good defense to the drunk driving charge, but did not think a public drunk driving trial was in the running back's best interests. Coming off a Super Bowl win, the attorney cited endorsement deals and other distractions that a DUI case would create.

As part of the plea deal, Lynch will have to serve two years probation and pay a fine. Probation basically means that Lynch will avoid any penalties now, but should he be convicted for a later drunk driving charge, he could face very severe penalties. Lynch's attorney described the reckless driving charge as the equivalent of an "unsafe lane change."

The plea deal that Marshawn Lynch entered was not out of the ordinary. In fact, most DUI charges are resolved through plea deals and are not fought out in a dramatic courtroom battle.
