Justin Bieber Offers Lesson on Underage DUI

Posted by Aaron J. Wolff | May 06, 2014 | 0 Comments

Pop-singer Justin Bieber was arrested for driving under the influence in Florida earlier this year and is now seeking a delay to the trial scheduled to begin next month, reports The Associated Press.

Bieber was charged with a DUI, resisting arrest, and driving with an expired license following an alleged drag racing incident near Miami Beach. Strangely, Bieber was not charged with drag racing.

At the time of the arrest, the 20-year-old Bieber tested below the 0.02 blood alcohol limit for drivers under the age of 21. However, a urine test did identify marijuana and an anti-anxiety drug in the singer's system.

Washington Laws on Underage DUI

Washington DUI laws are similar to the laws in most other states when it comes to minor drivers. There is a standard to determine impairment for adult drivers at 0.08 blood alcohol level and a standard for drivers under the age of 21 at 0.02 blood alcohol level. So a minor like Bieber could potentially be charged with a DUI for having as little as one beer if that pushes his blood alcohol level above 0.02.

However, even if you are not legally drunk, you may still be charged with a DUI if you are under the influence of drugs like marijuana or prescription drugs. Prosecutors typically only need to show that your driving is impaired or that you have more than five nanograms of THC in your system if you smoked pot.
