Jason Priestly jokingly asked Chelsea Handler on 'Chelsea Lately': "What self-respecting Los Angeleno doesn't have a DUI under their belt?"
Priestly, the former star of 'Beverly Hills 90210' was commiserating with Handler who similarly had been convicted of a DUI in the past, reports the New York Daily News. The two then high-fived as Priestly described his time in jail for the offense.
It's been over 20 years since Priestly was convicted and sent to jail, so that may explain why he was able to joke about the serious offense and penalty. The 44-year-old Priestly described how he was sent to jail for five days and how he had no idea what to expect. The actor said that he walked into the prison cell and how his tough-looking cellmates stopped their card game to give him a once-over. Fortunately, one of the men recognized Priestly for his role as Brandon Walsh and picked him up and hugged him. After that, Priestly spent his time playing cards with his cellmates.
At the time of arrest and incarceration, Priestly was at the top of his fame. Even still, his name could not prevent him from getting locked up. A drunk driving offense is considered a serious criminal offense and there are mandatory minimum jail times if you are convicted. So even if you are rich and famous, there's a chance you could lose your freedom.
Reflecting on the ordeal, Priestly and Handler agreed that they learned a lot from their DUI experiences. The two lamented that the most important thing to remember is not to get two DUI convictions. Priestly stated that you have to learn your lesson with the first one and not to get the second.
