Holiday DUI patrols are set to begin in Washington State on Wednesday, the day before Thanksgiving. The DUI patrols are expected to continue every day until New Year's Day.

There is typically a spike in drunk driving during the holiday season. More people may be drinking at parties and individuals may let their guard down as they enjoy vacation and time with family. As a result, law enforcement are trying to prevent drunk driving by advertising their DUI patrols and looking for signs of intoxication on the road.

During the holiday season, the organization Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) is also trying to raise awareness of the dangerous time. According to its survey, MADD says that almost three-quarters of adults have been at an event where they have seen someone drink too much and still try to drive. For the three combined holidays of Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year's, MADD says that there are nearly 700 drunk driving accidents across the country where someone was killed or severely injured.

As a result, for the 27th consecutive year, MADD is sponsoring the "Tie One On For Safety" red ribbon campaign to urge individuals to use a designated driver if they plan on drinking. In addition, individuals are urged to consider other measures like taking public transportation or abstaining from drinking if they go out.
