Florida DUI attorney Thomas Lewis Edwards didn't quite get the attention he wanted with his Internet ad for his DUI defense law firm.
Edwards was reportedly arrested for a suspected drunk driving hit-and-run in Alachua County, Florida, reports the ABA Journal. He had a mugshot taken in what appears to be a jail-issued striped green shirt. And when his beaming face made it to the Internet, his mugshot wound up right next to the Internet ad for his law firm.
The firm ad asks potential clients if they've been suspected, charged, or arrested for a DUI? Edwards can answer "yes" to all these questions now.
Edwards was charged with six separate offenses including leaving the scene of an accident, DUI causing property damage, and refusal to take a blood alcohol test. In response to the arrest, Edwards gave the lawyerly answer that in the American criminal justice system, all criminal suspects are innocent until proven guilty. And he's right.
Edwards could potentially face monetary fines, jail time, and even professional sanctions for his arrest. However, the most severe damage may be the unwanted publicity and irony of a DUI attorney's mugshot appearing directly next to his DUI law firm ad.
