Summer vacation is upon us and law enforcement agencies throughout the state have stepped up their DUI patrols, reports MyNorthwest.com.
More people tend to hit the roads over the summer months as they attend parties, vacations, and other activities. With more drivers on the road there are also more drunk drivers. In fact, 30 percent of all traffic fatalities happen during the days between Memorial Day and Labor Day. Things have gotten so bad that authorities have dubbed these days as "The 100 Deadliest Days" on Washington roads.
To combat these deadly days, agencies across the state are making a concerted two-week campaign to catch impaired drivers.
This campaign that includes patrols focused exclusively on drunk drivers supplements heightened DUI enforcement that has been going on all year. Since the start of the year, there have been several high-profile DUI accidents. These deadly accidents have sparked lawmakers to draft new DUI laws as well as law enforcement agencies increasing DUI patrols.
But while the proposed new laws are languishing as lawmakers debate the effects of the laws on the budget, the increased patrols provide a more direct and immediate way to prevent drunk driving.
