Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over Campaign Begins August 16

Posted by Aaron J. Wolff | Aug 11, 2013 | 0 Comments

Between August 16 and September 2, you will see extra Washington State Patrol on roads and highways looking for drunk drivers, reports KVEW TV.

Drunk driving is the leading cause of death on Washington roads. In 2012, about half of the 439 deaths occurring on roads were caused by DUIs. As a result, for the next two weeks starting August 16, law enforcement personnel will be looking out for signs of drunk driving, drug use and driving, and other signs of impairment.

One of the challenges that face Washington drivers will be the legal use of marijuana and driving. The law sets the legal limit at five nanograms of THC. However, it's still unclear how drivers operate with this much THC in their system. In addition, if a driver is impaired by marijuana, he or she could still be arrested regardless of THC level.

Some signs of impaired driving that police officers may look out for can include:

  • Erratic driving
  • Inability to stay within lanes
  • Speeding or driving well below the speed limit
  • Following too closely other vehicles
  • Missing stop signs and other traffic infractions

While there may be pressure on law enforcement to look out for and arrest suspected drunk drivers, you should know that you are innocent of any charges until proven guilty.

Following an arrest, prosecutors and law enforcement may put a lot of pressure on you and make you feel as if you are guilty or did something wrong. However, you should know that you have rights.
