College DUI Courts Proposed

Posted by Aaron J. Wolff | Jan 23, 2013 | 0 Comments

Alcohol abuse in college is well known. Students between the ages of 18 and 24 are notorious for drinking too much and then getting behind the wheels of their car.

To deal with this problem, Washington state lawmakers proposed Senate Bill 5023. This bill would create a unique college DUI court.  In 2012, the Washington legislature created special "DUI courts."  Now, they are looking to expand the courts onto the university campuses.  These college DUI courts would very similar to normal DUI courts, but with some additional features:

  • Only students currently admitted to an institution of higher education or college are eligible to participate
  • College DUI courts may be physically located on a college campus
  • The students face the regular penalties of a DUI in addition to any conditions imposed by the school such as withholding of the student's diploma

With the ability to administer penalties that would dramatically affect a college student, the intent with this bill is to eliminate DUI's for college students.  The proposed legislation states that "the legislature finds that alcohol abuse on college campuses is a problem of state and national significance leading to increased risk of death, injury and sexual assault.

But regardless of whether the law is passed, college students should be aware that they face serious penalties if arrested for suspicion of driving under the influence.

Unlike many things in life, there are no second chances after getting busted for a DUI.

The conviction can remain on your record, and can seriously affect your future prospects. In fact, college students under the age of 21 should be aware that they could be busted for a DUI even if they have a blood alcohol level below 0.08.
