Avoid a Labor Day DUI in Seattle

Posted by Aaron J. Wolff | Aug 29, 2012 | 0 Comments

Labor Day is upon us once again, and Seattle DUI arrests are once again expected to reach record high numbers. Labor Day is statistically one of the deadliest days of the year for DUI. In 2010, 147 DUI-related fatalities were reported just on the Labor Day holiday. And the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports that drunk driving costs every American adult $500 a year, or the equivalent of 21 jumbo jet crashes. DUI is no laughing matter.

With stats like these, you can expect to see sobriety checkpoints all across Seattle on this upcoming Labor Day holiday, and you can also expect to see massively increased law enforcement. Police will be on the lookout for DUI offenders, and they will aggressively pursue anyone who shows signs of possible intoxication behind the wheel.

In fact, it appears that the increased enforcement has already begun. The Washington State Patrol, along with several other King County law enforcement agencies, have assigned additional officers for the annual “Drive Hammered: Get Nailed” campaign. Last year, the campaign resulted in a staggering 452 DUI arrests. According to watikileaks.com, Summer DUI Patrols are running from August 17th through Labor day

So how can you protect yourself and make sure that you don’t land yourself with a DUI charge this Labor Day? Here are some tips if you plan on consuming alcohol this weekend:

  • Get a designated driver. You can’t be charged with DUI if you aren’t behind the wheel, and having a designated driver allows you to let loose without endangering lives.
  • Bring the party to your home. And if you have friends who drink, invite them to stay the night. Alternately, you can enjoy the festivities at a friend’s home and ask to spend the night.
  • Use public transportation. Note that most Seattle buses will be running on a Sunday schedule with limited service, so check all schedules before making plans. Taxis should be readily available in the city.
  • Get a cab or towncar. Whatever the cost might be for the ride will be nothing compared to the costs associated with getting arrested for a DUI.

Washington has some of the most devastating DUI laws in America. If you receive a DUI charge, you will need a qualified Seattle DUI attorney to help you fight your case. At Wolff Defense, we have years of experience fighting DUI cases in Seattle, and we would love to talk about your case. Give us a call today to discuss your rights and your options.
