A Washington State Patrol officer travelling on I-405 saw a suspected DUI driver get on the freeway at about 9:00 p.m. on Saturday night. The suspect was driving without any lights on and was driving in an erratic fashion.
When the patrol officer tried to get the vehicle to stop, a car chase ensued which ended when the DUI suspect crashed into a barrier on the highway. Instead of giving up, the suspect then reportedly fled on foot, jumped a fence, and hid on a roof in an effort to evade capture, reports King 5 News.
With the assistance of a helicopter, police officers were able to arrest the suspect. Perhaps to their surprise, the DUI suspect was not a grizzled criminal, but a 15-year-old child.
As you know, it's illegal to drink alcohol when you are under the age of 21. As a result, the normal rules for driving under the influence are modified when dealing with a suspect who is under age.
For example, adult are typically considered to be driving drunk when they have a blood alcohol content above 0.08. However, someone under the age of 21 is considered legally drunk if he is driving with a blood alcohol level above 0.02. To give you some perspective, this means that an average-size teen may be considered driving under the influence if he gets behind the wheel after having only one beer.
Unfortunately for the teen suspect in this DUI case, the drunk driving charge may be the least of his worries. Not only was he allegedly driving drunk, but he also led police on a car chase that turned into a foot chase. The teen only compounded his troubles and possible penalties by trying to evade capture.
This teen suspect and other underage drunk drinkers who get behind the wheel of a car will need expert legal assistance to face their criminal charges. Drunk driving is a serious offense, and can lead to penalties that can hurt you for a life-time.
